This exhibition focuses on the relationship between history and fiction as it appears in the contemporary artist's book as hybrid artistic medium, located between image and text, between material object and a means of communication, or between spatial volume and time sequence.

Used sometimes to testify ephemeral actions or to communicate ideas and concepts (land art, performance, conceptual art), sometimes to develop a narrative from visual and textual heterogeneous elements (narrative art), the artist's book is, according to Ulises Carrión, a "spatio-temporal sequence" oscillating between the spatiality of the visual arts and the temporality of the literary text.

As such, the artist's book corresponds to Michel de Certeau's definition of fiction: a complex object that, playing on "a stratification of meaning", "tells one thing to say another" (Michel de Certeau , History, science and fiction), thus blurring the boundaries between historical fact and mythological fabulation, between biography and the formation of identity, between collective memory and subjective experience.

The exhibition is organized in five parts each exploring a different aspect of the relationship between history and fiction.

The exhibition is curated by Alexander Streitberger / Séminaire d’art contemporain
