Hilde Van Gelder teaches art history since 1860, Art and Ecology, Art Criticism, and Photo Hybrids in the Faculty of Arts at KU Leuven. Presently, she is Chair of the Archaeology, Art History, and Musicology Research Unit (AKM) in the Faculty of Arts. In 2021, she published Ground Sea. Photography and the Right to Be Reborn with Leuven University Press. This two-volume book, fully available in free open access, investigates how photography can be instrumental for both re-legitimating and imagining fundamental rights. Her ambition to help establishing a rights-based art history has more recently resulted in an experimental praxis of environmental art research, about which she shares information on her personal website.
