W.J.T. Mitchell has been appointed by the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium as Invited Thinker for 2020. As a start-up, he curates the exhibition Metapictures in VANDENHOVE, on images about images. The exhibition will be realized in collaboration with Prof. Hilde Van Gelder (KU Leuven) and Prof. Bart Verschaffel (UGent).
Mitchell is professor at Chicago University and editor of Critical Inquiry, a quarterly dedicated to critical theory in the arts and humanities. He publishes widely on the history and theory of the media, visual art, literature, and iconology (the study of images across the media), with monographical publications such as Picture Theory (Chicago, 1994) and What Do Pictures Want? Essays on the Lives and Loves of Images (Chicago, 2005).
